(Halifax, NS) Due to COVID-19, this year’s Atlantic Jewish Film Festival (AJFF) has made the leap to an online viewing experience. Movies from Israel, Russia, Brazil and the United States make their Atlantic debut as the Atlantic Jewish Council presents the seventh Atlantic Jewish Film Festival from November 19-22, with ten films screening on the Cineplex Cinemas’ platform, for everyone in Atlantic Canada to access. A Festival Pass is available for $44.99 (plus tax), with General Tickets $10.99 (plus tax). Each film purchased an be viewed once only with an Atlantic IP address. All films can be viewed at your leisure on your own schedule during the five days of the AJFF.
This year’s films range from Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles (USA, 2019), the first in-depth documentary about turning the iconic musical into a film, to The Humorist, Michael Idov’s social satire set in the midst of the collapsing USSR.
AJFF Committee Chair Lynn Rotin commented, “We’ve selected comedies, dramas and documentaries that will sweep you away from present realities. Now everyone in Atlantic Canada can watch the movies when they want from the comfort of home, and there’s something for every taste.”
The much-anticipated 2020 film version of Judith Kerr’s novel, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, about a young girl in 1930’s Nazi Germany screens this year, as does Back to Maracana, a comedy-drama about three generations who make a trip to Brazil to attend the World Cup.
Film fans can watch the AJFF films on their TVs, computers, tablets, phones and on Apple TV by creating or logging into their Cineplex account. All the details on how to watch are available on the Festival’s website, www.ajff.ca.
A “bonus” film by Haligonian Lynda Medjuck Suissa can be screened free with any ticket purchase. Camp Kadimah: The Story of our Lives, pays tribute to the Jewish communities of Atlantic Canada, who founded the children’s summer camp on the shores of Lake William, Nova Scotia.
The Atlantic Jewish Council (AJC) has been the cornerstone of Jewish life in Atlantic Canada since 1975, acting as the organized Jewish community’s representative and program/service provider for non-religious matters. The AJC has been a strong voice for Israel and the Canadian Jewish community.
The Atlantic Jewish Film Festival is supported by the HRM’s Regional Event grant, The Azrieli Foundation and many private donors and sponsors.

2020 SHMF Signature Grant to NBCCDSheila Hugh Mackay Foundation is proud to announce a signature grant awarded to the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design to sponsor a virtual lecture series A free weekly series of professional talks has been organized in partnership with the Atlantic Centre for Creativity to celebrate the talent and exceptional work of New Brunswick artists. Building on a public program initiated in 2019, this virtual series reaches far beyond the traditional boundaries of local lecture format.
Conceived and organized by the Studio Head of the NBCCD Graduate Studies Program, Jean Rooney, this series of talks by artists and designers is a platform especially relevant during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ms. Rooney notes, “it is essential to support and communicate with each other as artists and designers. As artists and artist-educators, we teach what we know, but often, we teach who we are. In particular, we model to emerging artists and each other how to adapt, renew and survive. With this in mind, the speaker series shares the resilience and creativity of creators.”
With this sponsorship, SHMF continues to promote the visual arts of New Brunswick through the support of innovative New Brunswick driven projects. More information on this public series:

Visual Arts Nova Scotia is excited to announce a new program starting in November called Creative Consults!
Want to share your expertise with artists as a consultant? Apply today!
This new program will function as a service directory for VANS members to book consultations with member specialists in various fields. The consultation services will be catered to the professional development of the Artists’ needs. The directory on the VANS website provides members with exclusive access to consultant services tailored to meet their needs.
If you are a VANS member and would like to become a consultant in our program, please fill out the application form no later than October 18th.
Creative Consults is an online program for VANS members to access artist-informed expertise. Members will have access to a directory of consultant profiles and book directly with a creative expert that suits their needs. Each member consultant will have a profile on our website, making their services available to members, and set their hourly rates for each service.
Recommended rates are between $40 and $100 per hour.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
Application Once the expert has applied, a jury will choose the consultants based on the expertise they offer to artists and meet the eligibility criteria. This program is a VANS member-to-member benefit. The VANS membership is required to activate the consultants’ profile in the Creative Consults directory. There is no fee to participate beyond the VANS membership. Not a VANS member? You can become one here.
Consultant profile Once the application is approved and the VANS membership status is confirmed, The consultant’s profile will appear on the Creative Consults page through the VANS website. Each profile will include a photo, short bio, list of consulting areas and the hourly rate for each type of consult they offer. We ask consultants to have clear service rates provided for members’ inquiries.
Booking requests A member will search through the profiles to find a consultant that suits their needs. The consultant will receive a booking request from a VANS member via email and ensure they have the skills the member is seeking and are available. The consultant will follow up with the booking request within a week of receiving it. They will then independently coordinate a date and time with the member for the consultation within 3 months of the request.
Before the meeting The consultant will email an invoice to the member stating the member’s consult needs, the consultation type, amount of hours booked, the total amount owed, payment instructions, date and meeting place confirmed (virtual meetings are encouraged at this time).
Payment Once the meeting is confirmed, the member will send the payment directly to the consultant. It is advised that the consultant asks for the payment 2-3 days before their meeting. It is the consultant’s responsibility to collect their remuneration from the member.
After the meeting The consultant will send VANS and the member a receipt to confirm the consultation’s completion. The member will receive a survey to provide feedback on their experience.
